Mountainboarding is an adrenaline sport that combines the best aspects of snowboarding, surfing and skateboarding. It offers the thrill of snowboarding on a variety of terrains during the off-season; long after the snow has melted. With mountainboards, outdoor enthusiasts are no longer restricted by weather patterns, limited types of terrain, or icy or windy conditions.

All-Terrain Boards offers you the ability to ride, year round, regardless of season, snowfall, wave action or smooth streets.

How do you steer a mountainboard?
You steer a mountainboard by carving toe-side and then heel side making what we call J turns. Turning further up the hill will make the board slow down and eventually stop.

How do you stop a mountainboard?
Turn the board real sharply uphill and you will stop the board. Also you can use a hand-held V brake but it is best to learn to stop without a brake by turning and powersliding. Like a hockey stop on ice skates.

All-Terrain Reveiws says this about MBS: MBS makes one hell of a board! They are leading the industry in the direction of the composite board. If your looking for something that will last a long time go for an MBS Board. Many pro riders look to MBS to complete their quivers.

RACE TIPS by J Lee of MBS Mountain Boards

Here are some simple things to practice in order to become a proficient mountainboard racer.

#1 - Pump Rollers - There is a fine line between slowing down over a roller and speeding up. It's all in the timing. Suck it up as you start over it and then compress as you go over. Rollers are a good opportunity to make up some speed if you get a bad start.

#2 - Riding in Traffic - Not with cars but other riders. Become comfortable with riders on your left and right as you head into a berm or jump. One key I've found is to get low. The lower you are the more sturdy you are when you get hit. Practice riding with friends in a tight formation.

#3 - High Speed Berm Manuvering - Different berms call for different approaches. You really need to know where you are going before heading into a berm. Either set up high or low depending on your ability to attack the berm and where other riders are in relation to the berm.

#4 - Gate Starts - This is potentially the most important part of racing. So start doing your push-ups now. It's all in the timing and your upper body strength. You gotta just fly out of the gate as if you're the only one racing. And then hold on for the rest of the race and don't mess up.

#5 - Handling losses - Most of the time in boardercross racing you will not always come in first. But typically as long as you come in second you keep moving on in the race bracket. So even if you lose one of your heats just keep it cool and don't worry about the loss. Just concentrate on your next heat.

#6 - Pace Yourself - There is a fine line between practicing and just wearing yourself out. Make sure to keep in the shade, stay hydrated and only take as many practice runs as you need to be comfortable with the course. Save most of your energy for the real runs, that's when you really need it.

HOW TO DO A FLATGROUND BACKSIDE 180

Step 1: Come into this trick with a moderate amount of speed and wind your body in the opposite direction you want to spin. In this case Joel is pre-winding his body to his left but he willwant to spin back to his right.

Step 2: Now lower your center of gravity a bit and start releasing your body in the direction you want to spin.

Step 3: As you start to spin pop into the air and start looking into the direction you want to go.

Step 4: Now start estimating how much more you need to hold onto your spin and adjust your body to come down.

Step 5: Try to land exactly 180 degrees from the where you started in step one. The closer you are to a true 180 the easier it will make riding away.

HOW TO DO A DIRT POWERSLIDE

A powerslide is one of the most basic but yet important mountainboard manuevers. Before the advent of a hand-held braking system the only way to really stop was to inititate a hard powerslide. As well, ripping a powerslide is just plain cool. Throwing dirt and debris into the air as you finish in a cloud of dust. Not a bad way to come to a stop.

Step 1: Carry a bit off speed into this manuever. If you are not going fast enough you won't be able to make your board slide out.

Step 2: Start initiating your turn by leaning heel-side. In this example Joel is riding regular foot and is reaching down and grabbing his toe side edge of his deck.

Step 3: Complete your slide by continuing to carve in your original direction and at the same time taking a bit of the pressure off your back wheels thus allowing the "slide" to happen.

Next step: Try your powerslides on all types of terrain including grass and pavement.

HOW TO DO A BACKSIDE BOARDSLIDE by Halston Rhodes

I love backside boardslides. It is a great way to get used to a rail before throwing down a bigger trick like a frontside boardslide or feeble/smith.

Step 1. Approach the rail at a moderate speed. Don't go too slow or else you won't have enough speed to slide the entire rail.

Step 2. I like to keep the rail at least 12'' behind me. This way I have plenty of room to throw my trucks over the rail.

Step 3. Ollie twards the rail while rotating your hips perpendicular to the rail. Make sure to stay centered over the rail.

Step 4. When landing you have two choices. A. Rotate your hips back and whip your board straight and land regular or B. Continue the rotation a full 180 and land switch.

Once you learn this trick see what types of terrain you can throw it on. Boxes, rails, ledges, benches, its limitless. Oh, and have fun. Cause if you're not having fun, whats the point?

    CLIFF DROPS by Jason Lee

Step 1: Make sure you are an all-around strong rider with strong legs.

Step 2: Identify drops of about 5' + and work your way up. Don't think that you can drop cliffs like on a snowboard with powder landings. This is mountainboarding - you land on dirt. The largest rideable cliff drop will be about 20' vert and that is for baddass riders. Good candidates for jumpable cliffs are not only sheer drops but they have good and safe run-out areas. A good cliff drop will not only have a decent drop but a good angle to land on. The steeper the angle, the easier the drop. People can drop off anything but the key of course is to ride it out. In addition to a good landing angle the landing must be solid. The more hard-packed the landing is the easier it will be to stick the landing. The softer the landing the more you will sink and usually get thrown forward on your board.

Step 3: Make sure as you head into the drop you are confident. Basically don't chicken out at the last moment and just fall off the cliff. Just say to yourself "I'm gonna stick this sh_t! And do it."

Step 4: Now that you are committed to the drop make sure you have enough speed. Speed is your friend. Stay forward on your board and get ready for the impact. Absorb the impact, regain control and ride it out.

Step 5: Celebrate, bask in the glory, do it again and make sure to get the grab this time.

    Tech Tips

CLEAN UP AND SPEED UP YOUR BEARINGS

Are your bearings running slower than they used to when your board was new?  The answer is probably "Yes" if you've been doing any real mountainboarding at all.  This is the nature of our sport - STUFF GETS DIRTY.  The following MBS Tech Tip shows you the best way to restore your bearings to their original speed (and even make them faster depending on which lubricant you choose to use.

    • Step 1: Prepare a work area in a well ventilated spot.  Fumes are toxic so this is very IMPORTANT!
    • Step 2: Remove black rubber shield from bearing.
    • Step 3: Soak your bearings in solvent such as turpentine or gasoline to remove dirt grime and old grease.
    • Step 4: Apply the oil or grease of your choice* to bearing. Oil will be faster but needs to be replaced more often to avoid wear to the balls. Grease lasts a long time, but is slower.
    • Step 5: Press black rubber bearing shields back into place.
    • Step 6: Reinstall bearings in board and go faster than you've ever gone.

    * MBS recomends visiting your local skate shop to see what lubricants they carry. Some good products to look for are BSB High Speed Lube, Bones Speed Cream and Sonic Super Oil.

    PREVENT FLATS USING "SLIME" PRODUCTS.

The best way to fix flats is to prevent them from happening in the first place. There are several products on the market but the fine folks at Slime have got it pretty dialed in. Their SLIME Tube Protector is a lightweight durable strip of extruded polyurethane that fits between the tire and the tube. It protects from nails, glass and thorns. Spend less time working on your board and more time riding it.

    CHANGING EGGSHOCKS ON MATRIX TRUCKS

For those of you who have complete boards and have never changed your eggshocks before here are a few helpful hints. The reason for changing your eggshocks can vary. Most people are advancing in their riding level and want a more stable position. These people are typically doing larger jumps and want more stable speed coming into the jump or are racers or freeride riders. In this case people will replace their yellow eggs for orange eggs. Some people have orange eggs and they want to carve more in which case they are changing from orange to yellow or taking the eggs out all together. Whatever the case here are the basic steps.

    1. Remove bottom spring retainer bolt. Use a 3mm hex key. Make sure to change eggshocks one at a time. Take one out, replace it, tighten it back up and then move on to the next egg. Attempting to change all eggs at once is more difficult and not recommended.

    2. Pressure deck on one side and remove spring, eggshock and spring retainers. Standing on one side of the deck is a great help to release the spring pressure which allows you to easily remove the springs, egss and spring retainers. Having a friend stand on the deck while you make the change is a great help. Not only can you concentrate more on the removal but he can apply more pressure on the deck allowing an easier change.

    3. Insert new eggshock inside spring and reassemble parts. Again, having a friend pressuring the deck for you is a great help. Make sure that all components are being put back in. Sometimes people will forget to put the tophat washer on top of the upper tophat. Also remember that the upper tophat has no threads while the bottom tophat does.

    4. Repeat steps for all 4 eggshocks. When you are finished you can adjust the pressure on the springs. If you are putting harder durometer eggshocks in you will probably need less pressure to acheive the same carving resistance as you originally had.
